A slide presentation based on the simple pyramid addition problem. However there is a focus on changing one part of the problem each time, to allow students to keep investigating and exploring, understanding there is not always one correct answer.
The way I present these slides is that we talk through and explore together how to create the largest number in the top box, then I introduce a what if, which is to force a 2 in the middle bottom box – we try and make links with our answers and how we know it is the maximum answer possible. Then we break off as I allow the students to explore a constraint that they want to look at, odd numbers, trying to hit a target, etc. We finish as always by summing up what they were working on in a sentence, and what skills they learnt whilst doing it.
