4 in a row – fluency practice for pairs or individuals

A collection of addition and multiplication sheets ranging from 2 digit addition to 4 digit multiplication. The idea is to use the numbers at the top to find a row of four in the bottom section.

These are based on an activity I saw a long time ago, and now I use this regularly for my Year 5 classroom. I use them for pair work to practice fluency, where students take turns picking two numbers from the top and then either add or multiply them together and find the answer in the grid. They are self checking – if the answer isn’t there – then you need to correct it! What happens is students start inversing the operations or using mathematical thinking to predict what numbers would be good to choose. Can be done independently or with a teacher as part of intervention groups too.
